When the Eyes See Differently: Possible Psychosomatic Connections of Astigmatism and Strabismus

Our eyes help us see the world, find our direction, and maintain our sense of balance. But what happens when the eyes don't work together as they should?

Astigmatism occurs when the eye's optical system focuses light unevenly, which can cause blurred or distorted vision.

Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned — one eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. It is sometimes described as one eye “drifting” or “looking in a different direction.”

From a psychosomatic perspective, we can explore these conditions through the emotional experiences and inner conflicts a person may be carrying. This is a reflective approach,

🌿 Possible themes to explore:

✨ 1. Two different perspectives

Could there be a situation in which a person feels pulled in two directions? Perhaps one part wants to move forward, while another wants to retreat. One part sees an opportunity, while another anticipates danger.

What if we gently explored the tension between these two perspectives?

✨ 2. Difficulty finding one's direction

Are there moments when a person doesn't know where to look, what to choose, or which direction to take?

Perhaps there is a conflict between personal desires and external expectations, between “what I want” and “what I should do.”

This doesn't mean the eyes are expressing that conflict physically. Rather, the metaphor may help a person explore what is happening in their inner world.

✨ 3. Feeling unsafe with what one sees

Sometimes, looking at a difficult reality can bring up fear, grief, or helplessness, anxiety.

We might explore questions such as:

  • Is there something in my life that feels difficult to face?

  • Do I feel safe seeing things as they are?

  • Am I afraid of what might happen if I acknowledge what I truly want?

These questions can support self-reflection.

🌿 What about dizziness and balance?

Our sense of balance depends on several systems working together, including the inner ear, vision, and the brain.

Strabismus and certain vision problems can interfere with depth perception or cause visual discomfort and, in some cases, dizziness. However, occasional dizziness upon standing may also be related to a temporary drop in blood pressure, dehydration, medications, or other medical conditions.

If someone sometimes gets up and suddenly feels dizzy, it is important not to overlook the physical side of the experience. Recurrent symptoms deserve medical evaluation. Sudden severe dizziness, difficulty walking, double vision, weakness, trouble speaking, or a sudden severe headache require medical attention.

💗 Questions for gentle self-exploration

Instead of asking, “What emotion caused this condition?” we might ask:

🌸 Where in my life do I feel pulled in different directions?

🌸 Is it difficult for me to trust my own perception?

🌸 Where do I need more clarity, safety, or support?

🌸 Can I allow myself to pause without needing to figure everything out immediately?

The purpose of psychosomatic exploration is not to blame ourselves for our symptoms or to believe that every physical condition has a hidden emotional cause.

It is to develop a kinder relationship with ourselves -one in which we can listen to our emotions, care for our bodies, and seek appropriate support.

Our body deserves curiosity, not blame. Our inner world deserves compassion, not another reason to judge ourselves. 💛
